Baron Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot # 1 - Bike won't start - If your bike won't start, you have one of four problems.

1. No spark
2. No gas
3. No air
4. No compression

1. To test for spark, take the plastic off, pull the sparkplug cap off, use a sparkplug wrench to take the sparkplug out, then put the cap back on the sparkplug, holding the sparkplug/and cap with some rubber handled pliers against an unpainted metal surface (like the engine) crank the engine over. It is preferable that you do this in a dark place for better visibility because the spark is understandably hard to see. You should see a nice blue spark when you crank the engine over. Don't see one or only see an intermittent or yellow spark? You've got an ignition problem. Be sure to carefully screw the sparkplug back in initially by hand (and then use the wrench to tighten the rest of the way)

2. To test for gas, pull the gas line off of the carburetor. Now, and be careful here (you're dealing with gas after all), put the line into a glass cup. Crank the engine briefly. Did gas come out? If not, there's your problem. If it did come out, look at the gas in the cup. Do you see bubbles? If so your gas has water in it. Drain the tank and refill it w/ fresh gas. If gas did come out and there's no sign of water in it, then you move on to the carburetor. Typically the problem there is it is gummed up with crud or varnished gas. That should be left to a competent mechanic. But before you conclude it is the carburetor, test the following stuff.

3. Is your air filter dirty or is there a hamster/squirrel/sock stuffed in the hose that goes between the air filter and the carburetor? If so, there's your problem, if not, continue on to the final step.

4. To test for compression you just need a compression gauge (they're very cheap). Follow the instructions on your particular gauge. Typically, you just take the sparkplug out, hold the gauge over the sparkplug hole while you crank the engine, then you stop and look at the gauge. You're looking for at least over 90lbs of compression, likely more. If you have less, there's your problem.
